Huddersfield Town suffer major blow in transfer pursuit –

Huddersfield Town have suffered a blow in the race for Charlton Athletic star Alfie May after news emerged that Birmingham City had seen a bid accepted for the striker.

It was claimed yesterday that the Terriers were pushing ahead in their pursuit of the 30-year-old, with reports claiming their own bid had been accepted. This was eventually proven to be out of date when journalist Richard Cawley shot down the rumour.

Mai was the one bright light in Charlton’s campaign last season. The Addicks struggled throughout, even briefly flirting with relegation to League Two. However, the arrival of Nathan Jones in February coincided with a rise in results and they eventually finished 16th.

Much of that was down to their talisman, who enjoyed an excellent debut season at The Valley. He finished as League One’s top scorer with 23 goals, while also winning the club’s Player of the Year.

It’s no surprise to see recently relegated sides now targeting the former Cheltenham Town man. Both Huddersfield and Birmingham are hoping to make their stay in the third tier a short one, which makes a proven goalscorer at this level all the more attractive.

The interest from Michael Duff has been known to the public for several weeks. Conformable Soccer Insider, the Yorkshire outfit launched a £750,000 bid earlier this week. However, Birmingham are looking to top that with a £775,000 bid of their own.

The report states that Charlton have accepted the Blues’ offer and May is now free to discuss personal terms with the club. This was backed up by Cawley, who posted on ‘X’ that talks would take place over the weekend ahead of a potential move to St Andrew’s.

Speaking about the rumors earlier this week, boss Charlton Jones said South London Press:

“It’s a very difficult one with Alfie. He’s our player and we love Alfie here, he’s a fan favorite and scores goals for us.

“I don’t want it to be just about Alfie. What we have to do with decisions on any player is to think about what is in the best interests of the club. If keeping Alfie is the best thing for this football club, then that’s what will happen.

“If for whatever reason Alfie May leaves this football club then we need to have players coming into the squad who will make this football club significantly better.

“I have no financial pressure or any pressure from the board or the club to do anything.

“That’s why I came here – to have that autonomy to make the right decisions for the football club, to be bold and really ask the board to support that. And they have, at all levels. We are not under pressure. We are a big football club in that sense.

“From what has been rumored around Alfie, we are under no pressure to sell to another rival.”

The writer’s vision

Nathan Jones has said Charlton are under no pressure to sell to another League One club, but every player has his price. It seems Birmingham have found that trigger and it will be a difficult move for Alfie May to turn down.

He has proven how deadly he is at this level in recent years. The chance to move to a club that could play in the Championship in a year’s time will certainly be tempting, especially as he enters the twilight years of his career. Cheltenham will also be watching the situation closely, with the Robins owing a share of any fee.
