Man arrested after ‘attempted murder’ stabbing in Devizes town centre

A man has been arrested after an ‘attempted murder’ stabbing in Devizes town centre.

Emergency services were called to the Sidmouth Road junction on the A361 Gains Lane at around 12.30pm today (Saturday).

A man, aged in his 20s, was found to have suffered stab wounds and was airlifted to the Major Trauma Center at Southmead Hospital in Bristol by Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken into custody in Melksham for questioning.

He is also being held on suspicion of possessing a bladed article in a public place and assaulting an emergency worker.

Det Insp Gareth Kitchener said: “While inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact location of this incident, we know that both the suspect and the victim were seen running into the location near the Kwik-Fit and onto Sidmouth Street immediately afterwards.

“We have received several calls from members of the public in relation to the incident and would urge any other witnesses who have not already contacted the police to get in touch immediately.”

He added: “We understand that this incident will have caused concern in the community, particularly given that it happened in broad daylight on a Saturday afternoon.

“We would like to reassure residents that we have quickly made an arrest and we do not believe there will be a wider risk to the public at this time.

“We would like to thank the local community for helping us with our inquiries so far.”
