France v England Doubleheader Test

England men’s head coach Shaun Wane will miss Saturday’s test against France in Toulouse as he recovers from ankle surgery.

Assistant Andy Last will lead a 19-man squad in the absence of Wane, who underwent surgery on Tuesday and had to miss a training session at Wigan on Wednesday.

Hull KR prop Jez Litten will also miss the test, withdrawn from the squad due to illness.

The latter said: “We had a slightly different build-up to the Test match this week with Shaun having to leave the camp but the players really stepped up and it was business as usual really.”

A new-look squad includes five players who have received their first England call-ups.

St Helens winger George Delaney is joined by Castleford Tigers center Sam Wood, Wigan Warriors player Brad O’Neill, Hull KR forward Elliot Minchella, Huddersfield Giants forward Oliver Wilson and Leeds Rhinos forward James McDonnell.

The test is part of a doubleheader, with the women’s team also taking on France at the Stade Ernest-Wallon in a celebration to mark 90 years of French rugby league.

The latter added: “This is an exciting squad and it’s always great to be able to reward players with their first international caps – all deserving of an England shirt.

“It’s a big occasion for the French as it’s their 90th anniversary and we’re under no illusions that they’ll come out strong in Toulouse on Saturday.”

After Saturday’s contest, England face a two-Test series against Samoa, the first at Wigan’s Brick Community Stadium – formerly the DW Stadium – on Sunday 27 October and the second at AMT Headingley in Leeds on Saturday 2 November (both 14 :30 GMT).

England squad revised: Ben Currie (Warrington Wolves), George Delaney (St Helens), Tyler Dupree (Wigan Warriors), Ash Handley (Leeds Rhinos), James Harrison (Warrington Wolves), Tom Johnstone (Catalans Dragons), Matty Lees (St Helens), Mikey Lewis (Hull KR), James McDonnell (Leeds Rhinos), Elliot Minchella (Hull KR), Harry Newman (Leeds Rhinos), Matty Nicholson (Warrington Wolves), Brad O’Neill, Harry Smith, Luke Thompson (all Wigan Warriors), Jack Welsby (St Helens), George Williams (Warrington Wolves), Oliver Wilson (Huddersfield Giants), Sam Wood (Castleford Tigers).
