I signed Anthony Gordon for Everton – I know why Liverpool missed out

This is not the first time that Liverpool have considered a move for Anthony Gordon.

This time Liverpool were in talks to sign the 23-year-old after Newcastle approached them over a transfer deal. However, talks broke down after Newcastle claimed Jarell Quansah instead.

Eddie Howe’s side must sell players before the June 30 profit and sustainability accounting deadline to avoid the risk of a possible points deduction or a stinging fine. There is still a chance Newcastle could re-enter Liverpool in negotiations for Gordon, but the clock is ticking.

Gordon clearly has Merseyside roots, having grown up in the city, which may mean he ticks a lot of boxes for the Reds. Despite his background with Everton, Gordon admitted that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was his idol growing up.

Two coaches have watched him become the player he is now during his time at Everton. Former Toffees academy coach Neil Dewsnip worked more closely with Gordon as England Under-18 manager.

Speaking about his development as a player, Dewsnip told BBC Sport: “Anthony was my last signing at Everton. He was a boy we looked at a few times, as did Liverpool. He was a bit of a late developer, physically immature. “
