Leeds United’s pre-season tour of Germany has not gone down well with the Euro 2024 police, meaning Whites fans will not be able to watch their club in action and the 49ers will be keen to avoid similar pitfalls in future.

Pre-season officially kicks off for Leeds tomorrow as Daniel Farke welcomes back his side’s first wave following last month’s play-off woes.

Internationals are due to return later in July when pre-season fixtures begin, including a tour of Germany, which suffered a major setback for the club this week.

Leeds were forced to play German pre-season fixtures behind closed doors

Confirmation of plans for Leeds’ pre-season schedule came this week, with murmurs of a trip to Germany ringing true.

However, a major problem comes with this news, as Leeds’ statement said that authorities in the current Euro 2024 host nation have blocked the Whites from being able to play their friendlies in front of their fans.

As such, the club has asked fans not to travel to the country for a series of closed-door friendlies in Germany.

Wrexham and Birmingham discuss US League One clash, 49ers could keep an eye on developments

Another notable EFL development this summer comes for Birmingham City and Wrexham, both now in League One after relegation and promotion last season.

Both are predominantly American-owned, with Wrexham run by famous actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, while the Blues are owned by Knighthead Capital, led by Tom Wagner as chairman and NFL legend Tom Brady as a major investor.

The two third-tier sides are set to meet next season and reports have emerged via the Telegraph that informal suggestions have been made to play one of their league games in the US as a means of building the EFL’s appeal across the Atlantic.

Such proposals do not appear to be taking off, despite sustained hopes from those in the States that overseas league matches will one day take place:

“Dealmakers and administrators in the US have repeatedly spoken of their hopes of eventually attracting a Premier League game to America in the coming seasons.

“However, despite unprecedented viewing figures in America, both the top flight and the EFL remain against the idea of any of the domestic competitions being played abroad.”

While Leeds have their plans in place for Germany this summer, the market is noticeably ripe in the US for clubs to tap into and develop commercially, as Birmingham have discussed here.

The 49ers have already seen that through the huge celebrities that have lined up behind Leeds over the past 12 months, and it may not be long before they book a trip to North America at some point, cementing that link between the NFL franchise and football. club.

League games in the US have no chance of passing the court of public opinion (especially with Leeds fans), but the pre-season could be another step in building the brand further.

Knowing there is a market for two League One sides to go and sell out big stadiums in the States, the potential is high for Leeds.
