Sheffield United boss issues warning to young Irishman after EPL debut

Irish teenager Sam Curtis had a career highlight yesterday as the youngster made his Premier League debut in Sheffield United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton.

The 18-year-old would come off the bench for the final half-hour of the clash at Goodison Park, making his first appearance for England just months after his move from St Pat’s.

A hugely talented right-back, Curtis has received plenty of plaudits for his performances in his relatively short time in the first team at Richmond Park. That led to huge interest from big clubs overseas, with the player eventually choosing to move to Sheffield United.

This Premier League appearance is likely to be the first of many for the player, although his manager was keen to give him a timely warning after the game.

While Irish fans may be getting very excited about what’s next for Sam Curtis in the coming years, Chris Wilder will be keen to keep the player grounded.

Speaking after the game, the Sheffield United manager said the game should serve as a warning to the teenager about how much he still has to improve if he is to make the most of his career.

He had the chance.

I think he’ll look back on it and think, wow, it’s a different league, a different set-up, a different pace than what he’s used to.

It was by no means a fulfilling debut, but it gave him a taste of what the Premier League is like, how physical it is, how fast it is.

He needs to be in the loop if he wants to be a part of what’s to come.

Given the mindset he’s displayed up to this point in his career, there will be no worry of Sam Curtis getting carried away behind this appearance.

With Sheffield United poised to return to the Championship in the coming months, the Irishman is likely to get plenty of playing opportunities next season. This experience should certainly allow him to move on.
