Flood alerts in England as storms expected within hours

The government’s flood warning service has issued several warnings across England ahead of the storms forecast for tonight – with a number located in the West Midlands. Flood warnings have been issued for the West Midlands, East Midlands, along with the south and south-east of England.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is currently in place for much of western England and Wales until 11pm tonight 12 May. There have been warnings of potential flooding, travel disruption and power cuts as a storm front is expected to sweep across Britain.

In the West Midlands, a number of flood warnings have been issued for the region’s rivers and waterways. There are a total of six flood alerts covering Birmingham, the Black Country and Solihull.

  • Upper Tame to Sandwell Valley (Sandwell)

  • Low land and roads between Horseley Heath and Castle Vale on the River Tame and Bescot on Ford Brook (Sandwell/Birmingham)

  • River Stour and Smestow Brook (Dudley/Staffordshire)

  • Low land and roads between Longbridge and Nechells on the River Rea (Birmingham)

  • Low land and roads between Majors Green and Coleshill on the River Cole (Birmingham)

  • Low land and roads between Cheswick Green and Blyth End (Solihull/Warwickshire)

The government’s flood warning service said the alerts were issued as a “precautionary measure following the forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area from midday today”. He continued: “There is uncertainty, however, about the amount of precipitation expected and the exact location of these storms. River and surface water flooding can affect these areas.

“We urge you to remain vigilant and avoid walking and driving through flood water. We continue to actively monitor the situation closely and will issue updates and other flood alerts and warnings as necessary.
