Kohli’s ‘little drop’ gesture adds to the show, says Root

BIRMINGHAM (Reuters) – England captain Joe Root took Virat Kohli’s “little drop” gesture with aplomb and said the India skipper’s mocking impersonation helped make Test cricket a spectacle.

England were cruising to 216 for the loss of three wickets on the opening day of the first Test on Wednesday when a wrong call by Jonny Bairstow saw Root run out on 80 following a brilliant delivery by Kohli.

Kohli celebrated the dismissal with a ‘mic drop’ gesture, pretending to drop an imaginary mic, just as Root had done a month earlier when he ended the one-day international series with a second consecutive hundred.

“I actually think it adds to the whole spectacle of Test cricket, gives it a bit of humor and makes for a really fun series for something like that to happen so early, so we’ll see how it goes. over the course of the five Test matches,” Root told Sky ahead of the next day’s play.

England were all out in the first innings for 287 early on Thursday.

Root’s side won the one-day international series between the teams 2-1 and lost the Twenty20 competition by the same margin earlier this month.
