Plastic surgeons in Greater Manchester are very concerned about the practices

Manchester City Council said it was looking into allegations that certain cosmetic procedures could take place in hotel rooms

A Manchester plastic surgeon is increasingly concerned about what he calls a “grossly unregulated” industry.

Last week, Manchester City Council said they had been informed that certain cosmetic procedures, notably Brazilian breast lift and breast augmentation, could take place in Manchester in non-clinical settings.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, BBLs have the highest death rate (thought to be as high as 1 in 3,000 operations) of all cosmetic surgery procedures, due to the risk of injecting fat into large veins that can reach the heart or brain and cause severe illness and death.

Reza Nassab is a consultant plastic surgeon in Manchester and Cheshire, he said: “You’re putting your life on the line just to save a few pounds, is it really worth it?

“The industry has become highly unregulated in the UK and there is easy access to products and none of it is monitored or regulated.

“It has to be done in a sterile environment, it’s a very high risk if you inject any foreign object into the body, it’s a very high risk of infection and if you get infections that can be very problematic and cause a lot. of problems.

“These individuals are likely to be using inferior products that may not have been approved or have any safety records behind them.

“The clinic or location where the procedure is carried out should be CQC registered, this is the same organization that oversees hospitals… So they can make sure they meet a safety requirement.”
