Birmingham City close to signing Mike Eerdhuijzen

Birmingham City are expected to announce the signing of Mike Eerdhuijzen this week, according to De Telegraaf.

Birmingham City are looking to make their stay in League One short.

The Blues are doing all they can to ensure they have the best possible chance of immediate promotion back to the Championship this season.

It was a nightmare season for Birmingham City last time out. John Eustace looked promising but it all came undone with Wayne Rooney and unfortunately the appointment of Tony Mowbray didn’t work either.

The club seem to be back on track and their summer dealings have been interesting so far.

Eerdhuijzen, 23, currently plays for Sparta Rotterdam in the Eredivisie. He played 20 league games last season and scored once from centre-back.

Before joining Sparta Rotterdam, he rose through the academy at FC Volendam and made a name for himself in the Netherlands.

He has attracted interest from all over Europe, but it looks like League One’s Birmingham City have won the race. A report in the Netherlands claims the Blues have received a €2.5m offer and an announcement could be made as early as this week.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

It only goes one way

Birmingham City will probably have the strongest team on paper in the third tier.

They are expected to get automatic promotion this season and there is a good chance they will do just that.

The 23-year-old defender can also fill a gap at left-back, and the 6ft5 man provides a big presence at the back. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the demands of English football but, having played in the top tier in his native country, League One shouldn’t bother him too much.

Taking unnecessary risks?

While Birmingham City should be promoted this season, the money they are spending puts them in a risky position.

If they don’t step up at the first time of asking, they could be in financial trouble and that could put more pressure on the staff and players than it already is.

Boss Chris Davies is stepping into his first managerial role and despite experience in the back teams of Liverpool and Rangers, being number one is a different challenge.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure and if he can make his team live up to expectations this season.
