5 flowers to plant in July that are impossible to kill

The summer season is often when many gardeners want to relax and enjoy the sun. However, this period also presents the perfect environment for growing amazing flowers.

According to Alan Titchmarsh of Gardener’s World, one can grow a vibrant garden with minimal effort by growing flowers that are virtually indestructible.

Speaking about the issue, Alan expressed, “While it’s good to be challenged sometimes, it’s also essential to have enough plants in our gardens that are indestructible.”

“These are plants that, regardless of occasional neglect when it comes to watering, pruning or feeding, will grow in spite of us rather than because of us.”

With warm temperatures and longer daylight hours, July is a great month to plant some flowers, as they will bloom quickly with little maintenance, reports the Express.

The primroses

Primroses are popular flowers because of their distinctive five-petal flowers, which come in a wide range of colors and tend to be very easy to care for.

Alan said: “Who would be without these little beauties? Primroses love sun or shade and will self-seed in the garden without ever becoming a nuisance.”

They bloom from June to September and will bloom if placed in partial shade in slightly acidic soil.

Geranium

Geraniums are beautiful but hardy flowers that can thrive in warm temperatures and love the sun.

Alan said: “Cranesbill geraniums are copper-bottomed groundcovers with bright summer flowers that will cope with many inhospitable situations in sun or shade. They die in the winter, but they come back every year.”

These flowers will bloom spectacularly if they receive at least six hours of sunlight a day, they are best planted next to a vegetable garden as they are known to deter pests such as cabbage worms.

Brachiglottis

Bracchyglottis is a flower native to New Zealand known for being very drought and heat resistant.

They are also called Senecios or milkweed bushes because of their vibrant and cheerful yellow flowers and they do not require much maintenance which makes them perfect for any summer garden.

Alan said: “We used to call it Senecio ‘Sunshine’ and its bright yellow-daisy flowers borne on grey-green evergreen leaves continue sporadically into autumn.”

Penstemon

Penstemons, also known as beardtongue, are known for their long flowering period that can last for months and require less watering than other flowering plants.

Alan said: “Penstemons bear tall spiers of fox-like flowers on slender stems and are much tougher than they look.”

They are pretty white and pale pink flowers that can thrive in a variety of conditions, but to get the most out of these flowers, plant them somewhere open as they need six to eight hours of sun a day.

Astrantia

Astrantia are unique looking flowers that are often said to resemble a pincushion, earning them the nickname Hattie’s pincushion and will bloom for a long time in gardens as well as being a great pollinator for bumblebees.

Alan said: “Hattie’s cushion used to be considered a herbaceous filler, but with lots of new varieties that have purple flowers or long-petalled flowers, it has become an excellent choice for moist soils.”

They will do best when planted in the shade, meaning they will thrive in areas where most flowers would struggle, so grow them under trees, next to hedges or in any part of the garden that would it could look a little bare.
