Voters in Leeds urged to make their mark in the general election

Election Day Thursday, July 4th

Voters in Leeds are being encouraged to have their say by taking part in this week’s general election.

Polling stations in Leeds will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 4th July for all registered voters who have not already voted by post to support their candidate in the seven parliamentary constituencies managed by Leeds City Council . Anyone who is not sure where the polling station is can find out via https://wheredoivote.co.uk

All those voting in person on Thursday are reminded to remember to bring their form of photo ID accepted to the polling station, which will be verified upon arrival. To see the list of accepted forms of ID, visit Voter Photo ID (leeds.gov.uk). Voters will be able to use an expired ID if they are still recognizable from the photo.

Poll officials may need to ask voters to remove their masks to verify their identity. Privacy booths will be available at all polling stations, with the choice of a male or female official to conduct the check.

Anyone wishing to hand in a postal vote instead of returning it by post via Royal Mail should be aware of the following rules in force:

  • Completed postal vote packs can only be handed in at a polling station or Electoral Services office in Leeds Civic Hall, LS1 1UR. No other council office will be able to accept votes.
  • Anyone handing in a postal vote on their own or someone else’s behalf will need to complete a form, stating their name and address, how many postal votes they are handing in and why they are being handed in and not returned by post. Polling station and council staff will be able to assist with this process.
  • If you hand in postal votes on behalf of other people, this is now limited to the person handing in the votes along with up to five other votes – so a maximum of six.

For more information on completing and returning postal voting packs visit https://www.leeds.gov.uk/your-council/elections/postal-voting#newrules

The Leeds election count will take place overnight on Thursday at the John Charles Center for Sport, with results posted on the council’s website and Twitter account at @LeedsCC_News.

Acting Director and Chief Executive of Leeds City Council, Tom Riordan said:

“The general election is hugely important in shaping the future of Leeds and the country, so we encourage everyone registered to have their say by voting.

“Please note, if you are voting in person, you must take an accepted photo ID to the polling station, as you will not be allowed to vote without it.

“Postal voters please return your postal ballot, but if you must hand it in in person, please be aware of the new rules on where and how to do so. Counting will take place overnight on Thursday, so we look forward to another exciting election day and night.”
