Fire at Hotel California in remarkable aerial images

It was a sad weekend for Newuqay as a fire tore through one of the popular holiday destination’s best-known hotels. A fire broke out at the closed Hotel California on Sunday (30 June).

Smoke could be seen billowing into the sky above the coastal resort, home to nearly 25,000 people and tens of thousands of tourists who flock there for the season. Fortunately, the hotel has been closed for three years now with plans for residential conversion.

But at the time, there were concerns that people might have been inside. A report came in from the public to say homeless people were known to frequent the shuttered 68-bed hotel.

Here nine images show the extent of the fire from the sky. Images taken by Reece Flexon show a thick, dark plume of smoke billowing from the once-popular hotel and holiday destination.

The former hotel closed in November 2021 with a design and access statement submitted with the planning application stating that “after years of constant decay, the hotel has become obsolete and in a state of disrepair”.
