Sheffield Wednesday are set to fend off international competition for the hot-shot striker

Charlie McNeil is expected to sign for Sheffield Wednesday, choosing the Owls ahead of Serie A and MLS clubs, according to Manchester World journalist Michael Plant.

After a pretty amazing youth career with the likes of Manchester City and then Manchester United, McNeil was one of the hottest young prospects in English football at one point.

It’s fair to say that the striker hasn’t exactly gone to plan since making the transition to the senior game and was released by The Red Devils this summer without making a senior appearance for the Premier League outfit.

McNeil does have some senior football to his name though, through loan spells at Newport County and more recently Stevenage. He hardly set the world on fire in either, scoring twice in 20 appearances for the former and once in three games for the latter, a move that really didn’t work out for him.

Now released by Manchester United, McNeil’s next move is incredibly important to getting his career back on track. At 20, he still has bundles of potential, he just needs to show it in the senior game.

The striker is set to remain in England despite international interest, with Michael Plant revealing that Sheffield Wednesday are the club expected to sign the youngster.

In the process, they will beat the likes of Lazio and Torino in Serie A, as well as a no-name team from MLS.

There is a lot to like about the current direction Wednesday are heading and under manager Danny Rohl they really have an appeal factor that other clubs just don’t have. After a rather miraculous survival last season under Rohl, better is expected next season, with the German now having a summer transfer window to reassess his squad.

Adding McNeil to the mix further underscores their future direction, and while risky, it could work out very well.

The writer’s vision

There is so much to like about Sheffield Wednesday under Danny Rohl at the moment and there is a certain ambition and feeling around the club that has perhaps not been felt in previous seasons. While results are needed at present, the future looks incredibly promising and their transfer dealings reinforce this.

Despite struggling in the senior game so far, McNeil has plenty of potential and if he gains some confidence he could be a hit for the Owls. Don’t be surprised to see him out on loan for the first half of the season to get more minutes before fighting for a first-team spot.
