Wednesday legend Lee Bullen drops ‘nervous’ Steel City derby claim about Sheffield United

Lee Bullen believes Sheffield Wednesday will field a “bit edgy” team now.

Sheffield Wednesday certainly didn’t make anyone nervous at the start of the season, picking up three points from their first eleven games.

Gradually, however, things began to change when Danny Rohl was appointed manager in October.

The German claimed 16 wins in his 38 games in charge as he steered the Owls to safety – only Darren Moore, Carlos Carvalhal and Gary Megson have achieved a higher winning percentage in the past 60 years.

A six-game unbeaten run at the end of the season means Wednesday will play in the Championship again next season and it looks increasingly likely that Rohl will still be at the helm.

Reports claim the Yorkshire outfit have held “positive” talks over the 35-year-old’s future and their chances of moving up the table could be boosted if he stays.

Wednesday fans will be even more delighted to stay in the Second Division as it guarantees the return of the Steel City derby, with Sheffield United’s relegation confirmed with three games to go.

Sheffield United will be “nervous” to face the Owls

The two clubs have not met since the 2018/19 season, while on Wednesday they have won just one of their previous seven meetings.

However, Lee Bullen believes the Blades will be very “nervous” to face their local rivals.

Speaking at this weekend’s charity event, the former Owls caretaker manager said: “I really think they (United) will be a bit nervous. It’s a big recruiting summer for them and for us.”

Why Sheffield Wednesday hold the edge in the derby

While they have just played Premier League football, spirits at Bramall Lane will certainly not be as high as at Hillsborough.

United have a long list of first-team players out of contract this summer, with the likes of Jayden Bogle, Oli McBurnie and Oliver Norwood potentially on the way out.

With Chris Wilder’s future also in doubt, it could be a period of transition for the club.

Meanwhile, it seems the only way is at Middlewood Road. Danny Rohl has the potential to take Wednesday much higher up the table next term, while he will certainly be guaranteed funds if he stays at the club.

The Owls will be desperate to start their campaign with an early derby day, while United will be concerned about sustaining a real embarrassment after such a dreadful campaign in the top flight.
