The Hanham Wetherspoon pub has closed – but not for long

A Wetherspoon pub in Hanham has closed its doors but will soon reopen under new ownership. The Jolly Sailor has been sold to another pub operator after two years on the market and its last day of service under the Wetherspoons brand took place on Sunday 30 June.

While locals will be without their beloved tipple for now, Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon says “Wetherspoon has made changes to the property and completion is scheduled for July 5,” meaning it may no longer have too long to wait before they can go back inside for a drink.

The High Street pub has also offered its current staff a choice of jobs with the new owners or moving to another Wetherspoon pub in the region.

It comes after Wetherspoon announced that a number of pubs, including this one in Hanham, will close in 2022 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ever-increasing cost of food and energy bills. In April, BristolLive reported that the pub was apparently still on the market.

Despite this, The Jolly Sailor has long been described as “one of the best” in town, so no doubt its customers will be counting down the days until it reopens. BristolLive has contacted Wetherspoon for more information on the pub’s new owners and the exact reopening date.
