Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after Portugal miss penalty as Man United players comfort distraught star

Cristiano Ronaldo broke down in tears after missing a penalty for Portugal in extra time against Slovenia. The former Manchester United striker saw his spot-kick saved by Jan Oblak just before half-time in extra time in the Euro 2024 last 16 tie.

After having a one-on-one battle with Oblak throughout the game until the 105th minute, Ronaldo could not control his emotions and had to be consoled by his teammates at half-time. United defender Diogo Dalot was one of those who went to comfort Ronaldo as he was left upset at missing the biggest chance of the game.

Liverpool star Diogo Jota also consoled him, then Dalot put his arm around him as he cried, then spoke and kissed him as they returned to their positions. Bruno Fernandes was talking to Ronaldo as the Portugal camp looked to come together in the final 15 minutes of the match.

With no way past Oblak and a stubborn Slovenian pack up until that point, Roberto Martinez’s side appeared to be heading for penalties. Ronaldo’s powerful effort, struck to Oblak’s left, was stunningly tipped onto the post and wide of the mark.

Ronaldo, who scored 58 times in his first season at Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, scored Slovenia’s goal throughout the match, including from a series of increasingly ambitious free-kicks. In the second half, the best effort of the game came from a left-footed shot that was just straight at the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper.

Speaking on commentary, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown was in disbelief at Ronaldo’s outpouring of emotion but backed him to respond. “I think he’s professional enough, as we know, to move on with the game,” Keown said. “He carries the weight of a nation on his shoulders.”
