Brent Venables on Oklahoma in SEC: ‘This program stands on two legs’

Brent Venables believe Oklahoma ranks right up there with the SEC in terms of its history of football success. The Sooners are currently tied for 6th in college football history with 944 wins Alabama and Texas between teams in their new conference.

OU also brings seven national championships with it to the SEC, which it officially joined on Monday with the Longhorns. The Sooners also produced seven Heisman Trophy winners and 50 conference titles.

Those are all facts Venables pointed to as a reason they’re a good fit in the SEC, which has dominated college football for the past two decades.

“We’re one of the winningest programs in the history of college football,” Venables said Monday to the cheers of an Oklahoma crowd on the SEC Network. “This is a program, whether it’s a 47-game winning streak or the most conference championships in college football history. National championships, all Heisman winners. The countless players who are now in the Hall of Fame, both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

“…This program is based on two legs. Now you get an elite vs. elite match. An elite program like Oklahoma has for many years matched the best brand and best league in college football – the SEC.”

Oklahoma enters the SEC after a 10-3 season. Despite seven national titles, the Sooners have not won a championship since 2000 and have not made a College Football Playoff appearance since 2019.

The CFP is slated to expand to 12 teams next season, and OU’s schedule will get much tougher. The Sooners have games against Alabama, Oh miss, Tennessee, LSU and, of course, Texas on their way to proving themselves worthy of a postseason berth.

That history gives Venables confidence that it won’t be long before Oklahoma proves it belongs in the SEC. OU previously put together 23 straight winning seasons before going 6-7 in the coach’s inaugural season in 2022. However, the turnaround from last season comes at the right time and they will aim to carry that over to their new conference.

The Sooners are set to open the 2024 season on Aug. 30 against Temple and play their first SEC game on Sept. 21 against Tennessee in Norman.
