Orlando Brown on Brent Venables leading Oklahoma in SEC: ‘he’s right for it’

Your first two years Brent Venables‘ reigned as OklahomaHis head coaching didn’t exactly go the way the longtime defensive coordinator would have liked. But that hasn’t stopped former Sooners players and former players from speaking highly of their head coach.

During Oklahoma’s celebration officially announcing them as members of the SEC, former Oklahoma star offensive lineman turns into multiple NFL Pro Bowler Orlando Brown Jr. shared his thoughts on Venables and whether or not he thinks he’s a good fit for his alma mater.

“I think he’s right for it; it’s a great fit for the SEC,” Brown said. “That’s one of the reasons I feel they hired him as head coach at the time, knowing they were going to move forward with that decision. I saw him create a very special culture. And it’s important, especially in college, when you’re building a team continuity, the comfort that everybody can buy into one thing, one goal, one mindset, one heartbeat, all those things that you hear. ”

“That’s something Coach Venables does a great job of bringing in the right people and also allowing the young guys to buy in. This is so important at this level. I think he will continue to do that.”

In his first two seasons at Oklahoma, Venables went 16-10 and is 0-2 with two bowl appearances. Still, he’s generally considered a strong leader and a strong voice in the locker room, to Brown’s point. That’s why he and the rest of the Oklahoma faithful have the utmost confidence in Venables to lead the Sooners to a successful 2024 campaign to begin their SEC tenure.

Bob leans over Brent Venables: ‘He’s what you want’

Former head coach Bob leaned over appeared on SEC Network live from Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and explained why he thinks Venables is the right man to lead the Sooners into their new conference.

“Brent (Venables) has an amazing, tremendous passion and energy, he connects so well with the players in all the right ways,” Stoops said Monday. “I just have complete confidence that he’s going to continue to build this program positively and in a great way. I can not wait. But I have a long history with Brent, from recruiting him, to a player, to coaching him here for 13 years. He is what you want and he will do a great job and so will his staff.”
