“Today is your day, what you’ve accomplished is incredible,” said store owner and event host Andre Pommier, as the students each received a financial boost through the store’s scholarship program as they head into their next educational chapter.

The jeweler does not disclose the financial amount of the scholarships; Each recipient in attendance also received a Pommier Jewelers sweatshirt, and other items were presented, including provincial greeting scrolls provided by Stormont—Dundas—South Glengarry MPP Nolan Quinn.

Pommier, speaking at the store on the corner of Pitt and Second streets, said the scholarship is the same one he received when he graduated from École secondaire catholique La Citadelle and praised the winners for their time- management skills, saying these will be valuable as they move forward.

“You know what you want, you know where you’re going,” Pommier told the group, which included students heading to the University of Ottawa, the College of St. Lawrence of Cornwall and elsewhere. “We believe you are the future of our community.”

Pommier said Cornwall is a tight-knit community that graduates will often come home to even if they settle elsewhere, and Quinn touched on that small-town theme in his remarks.

“There is something special about Cornwall and SDG, and this (scholarship support) recognizing students from across the area is part of what makes it special,” Quinn said.
