Police warn or roofing, contractor scams in New Tecumseth

Nottawasaga OPP is warning the public about roofing and contractor fraud in the area.

On June 20, police were contacted about a scam in New Tecumseth after someone asked for cash in advance to complete roofing work. The victim provided the money, but the work was not completed. The suspect then demanded additional money. The suspect is described as Caucasian, of heavier build, with an Irish accent, aged in his 40s and standing between 1.5 and 1.5 metres.

“Fraudsters often contact people directly at home or over the phone, using persuasive tactics to convince owners of the need for a contract or service they neither requested nor asked for. It is advisable to exercise caution when opening your door to unexpected visitors or solicitors offering items or services,” police said in a press release.

Police are also reporting contractor fraud occurring in Alliston. They urge residents to be careful with cash transactions and cash deposits.

“There is a high likelihood that the work completed is fraudulent, uninsured and never completed, potentially causing further property damage,” police said.

Residents are advised to ensure their home monitoring systems are working and actively recording.

“If a deal is too good to be true or is being pressured, then there is a high probability that it is a scam.”
