The scheme, designed by RSHP Architects, will redevelop the 23-acre Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks site, with more than 70% of the land being converted into public open space.

The low-carbon homes will comprise a mix of affordable housing and homes for private sale. Plans for the site also include a new community space, shops, cafes, offices and a park along the banks of the River Lea.

The Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks site dates back to the 1870s and was used for gas storage until it was decommissioned in 2010.

Berkeley said it would restore and preserve the site’s seven Grade II listed gas holders and the outlet structures of the former gas works.

Dean Summers, managing director of Berkeley Group’s St William subsidiary, said: “We are delighted that our plans to regenerate the Bromley-By-Bow gas works received the backing of the Newham Strategic Development Committee last night.

“This comes after three years of detailed design and engagement work and I want to thank all our partners and local residents who have helped shape and support these exciting proposals.”

RSHP Senior Director Graham Stirk added: “RSHP are delighted to be involved in this challenging project which aims to protect Victoria’s heroic group of gas holders on a site that has been inaccessible to the public for over 150 years.”

Work is due to start on site in 2025 following the completion of a Section 106 agreement.

Construction costs have not yet been disclosed.
