Met Office ‘warmer weather’ update amid UK heatwave reports

The Met Office delivered its July verdict amid reports that Britain will enjoy a 29C heatwave later this month.

The seventh month of the year got off to a light start, with people taking to social media to complain about having to turn on their central heating. But some outlets said that could be about to change.

The Met Office’s official criteria for a heatwave depends on where you are in the UK. In Liverpool it must be 25C or more for three or more days.

The Met Office only provides regional forecasts for the next seven days and there is no chance of us seeing heatwave temperatures during this time frame. Tuesday, July 9, looks set to be the warmest day next week, with highs of 20C. It is also forecast to be “cloudy, changing to light showers by midday”, with lows of 15C.

Between now and then, we can expect a mix of cloud, rain and sunny spells, with highs around 16-17°C and temperatures that can feel as low as 7°C overnight.

Looking ahead, for the period from Sunday 7 July to Tuesday 16 July, the UK Met Office’s long-range forecast predicts that we can expect more mixed weather with “at times stronger winds”, although there are ” tentative signs that further into next week, conditions may start to become a little more stable, at least for a while.” Temperatures are likely to “return to average and then potentially above average as the week progresses.”
