Sir Ian McKellen has made a health announcement after suffering neck and wrist injuries in a fall on stage

Sir Ian McKellen has given an update on his health following a fall on stage which left him with neck and wrist injuries. The 85-year-old legendary actor hit the stage in June while performing in Player Kings at London’s Noel Coward Theatre.

The Burnley-born star has since taken to social media to share news of his condition. He confirmed he would not be taking part in the UK tour of his latest theater production, announcing his withdrawal with “the utmost reluctance” to “protect my recovery”.

In the unfortunate incident, Sir Ian suffered injuries to his neck and wrist, prompting him to cry out for help from the public. In a statement on social media, he reassured his fans: “Just two weeks after my accident on stage, I want to assure many well-wishers that the injuries (wrist and neck) I am on the mend.

“My doctors promise a full recovery, but only if I avoid work for the next few weeks. Meanwhile, the show goes on and the Player Kings company begins its four-week tour without me. My understudy David Semark, who brilliantly took over the venue for the final performances at the Noel Coward Theater in London’s West End, will play Falstaff again in Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich and Newcastle.

“Any actor will say that missing a show is somewhat embarrassing, even when it’s not their fault. None of us want to disappoint our audience.”

A statement from the production read: “Following Ian McKellen’s injury during the West End run of Player Kings, his doctors have advised him to take time off work to fully recover. As such, he will not be returning to play Sir John. Falstaff in the Players Kings National Tour (July 3-27, 2024).”

“Ian continues to recover very well but needs time to rest and ensure a full recovery. We continue to send him our best wishes.”

“As has been the case for recent West End performances, the role of Falstaff will now be performed by David Semark, Ian’s brilliant understudy, for all Player Kings tours.”
