Former Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith has revealed he has been approached for a new role – from a surprise source.

Australian-born Smith started out in a coaching role with the London Broncos before spending time with the Sydney Roosters, Newcastle Knights, Penrith Panthers and Gold Coast Titans.

After serving as head coach of Tonga, Bradford Bulls and Queensland Cup side Norths Devils, he joined Leeds Rhinos in April 2022.

His first year was a success, taking the Rhinos from 11th to fifth in the Super League standings and reaching the Grand Final.

However, following a string of poor results this year, which culminated in an embarrassing defeat to Hull FC, the club made the decision to part ways with him.

He has so far not found a new role following his sacking by Gary Hetherington and Ian Blease, but speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post recently, he revealed there has been some interest from various quarters.

That includes switching to a different sport, he says: “There has been a bit of interest, surprisingly, from rugby union, which I don’t have a lot of experience in.

“There are a few things around NRL clubs that may happen but nothing to report at this stage.”

He would not be the first man linked to Leeds Rhinos to switch to rugby union as club legend Kevin Sinfield left his role as director of rugby at Leeds to join Leicester Tigers as defense coach under Steve Borthwick, a role he continued for the England national team.

However, it seems far more likely that Smith will add to his extensive experience as an NRL coach, already following roles with four teams in the league.

On where his next role might be, he said: “I can only stay here if there is another job that presents itself.

“In terms of the visa, you can’t just sit around and do whatever you want.

“I’ve loved Britain every time I’ve been here, so there’s no desperation to return to Australia, only circumstances can send us back home. I want to train so that wherever work is always where home is.”
