Driver wanted, suspected of hitting a motorcyclist and leaving the scene in southern Colorado

Palmer Lake, Colo. (KKTV) – A warrant is out for the arrest of a driver who police believe hit a motorcyclist, causing serious injuries, and allegedly left the scene.

The crash happened on June 23 just after 8:00 p.m. on Highway 105 in Palmer Lake near Monument. Palmer Lake Police Department (PLPD) suspect Brent Gilmer was driving a truck when he crashed into motorcyclist David Mitchem. PLPD says Gilmer is wanted on charges including vehicular assault, reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident and others.

“The driver was described as a young white male with curly hair approximately 5′10″ to 5′11″. The driver was later positively identified by witnesses as Mr. Brent Gilmer, who lives in Palmer Lake. Multiple attempts were made to contact Mr. Gilmer with no contact being made,” PLPD said in a statement Tuesday.

Mitchem was taken to the hospital and spent several days in the Intensive Care Unit, according to his wife Tareja Mitchem. She says doctors say it will take up to a year for her husband to recover, and he could be permanently injured.

If you have information on Mr. Gilmer’s whereabouts, please use the “Dispatch Tip” on the Palmer Lake Police Department’s Crime Tracker page.
