Reports: Leeds Rhinos miss out on Paul Rowley as he commits to Salford Red Devils

Despite numerous reports over the past month or so to the contrary, it now appears that Paul Rowley will not be the next manager of Leeds Rhinos.

When Ian Blease became the new sporting director for the Rhinos, joining from Salford Red Devils, the rumors began to intensify. In his first week at the club, he dismissed Rohan Smith – seemingly leaving the way open.

Blease signed after seven-and-a-half years in his role with hometown Salford – a period in which he was instrumental in bringing Rowley to the club.

He joined Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers in moving to Headingley from the Red Devils – two players he sold for significant sums.

Speaking at a club press conference a few weeks ago, Blease even confirmed the club were interested, saying: “I’m interested in talented coaches, Paul will be one of them obviously. His name has been planted by you for some time.”

Rowley has done well to deflect the line of questioning that Sky Sports pundits and media journalists have been relentless in of late, and now that may be coming to an end.

The Rhinos, according to Blease, are nearing the end of their search – and Rowley likely won’t be the one to emerge as head coach.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Verdict today, Jon Wilkin revealed: “There are strong rumors that Paul Rowley would have liked it and now he’s out of the running, settled in Salford and wants to finish the project or what he did , me. I’m not sure if that’s right or not.”

He appears to be very committed to his current role, so this isn’t a huge surprise – he already rejected an approach from Hull FC earlier this year and has often spoken of his love for the Red Devils.

Speaking on The Bench Podcast recently, he spoke of how much he loved the club, even with the lack of resources they have compared to their peers.
