“Sunak not my cup of tea and Starmer, I don’t really know,” says first-time voter from Leicestershire

A first-time voter in Leicestershire has had his say on the people he hopes will be named the country’s next prime minister – and revealed who he plans to back in tomorrow’s general election. Jamie Blaylock, who turned 18 at the weekend, said he looked at the Tories and Reform but that Rishi Sunak was not “his cup of tea”.

Of Keir Starmer, Jamie said: “I don’t know much about him but I don’t really watch Labour.” As a result, Jamie said, he did not feel able to present a vision for himself and the Labor Party.

Jamie spoke to LeicestershireLive when we asked students at Leicester College if they would be voting. He said his priorities for the election were knife crime and immigration and its effect on the NHS. He added that the new government will also have to deal with inflation and that potholes need to be fixed.

“I will vote,” Jamie told LeicestershireLive “The priorities for England are, well, not national service, that’s a big one. Certainly the crime, all the knife crime, the economy as well because of the increase in inflation and immigration. Well, because it’s going to start affecting the NHS more and more, which isn’t a problem, it just means they have to work on the NHS.”

Jamie added: “I will be voting for Reform UK. I think Reform UK, because of the ideas they have, saying what they’re going to do.

“I mean, most prime ministers say they’re going to do things and it never happens, but if it’s in their plans and it happens, I think that would be great.”

Jamie said that after the election he would like to see, “definitely a drop in knife crime” and “fewer cars stolen because that would hopefully reduce car insurance and that’s a big thing for young drivers .
