‘Smart’ free agent Sheffield Wednesday tried to sign looks set to join Championship rivals

Rivals Sheffield Wednesday look set to sign their former January transfer target.

Sheffield Wednesday were desperate to bring in some attacking reinforcements in January, with their front five finishing with eleven goals between them.

Finally, they took Ike Ugbo on loan from Troyes, who scored seven goals in 19 appearances.

He wasn’t the only striker they tried to sign though, with Mika Biereth once a striker they have since rekindled their interest in.

The Daily Mail also reported that they made a loan bid for West Ham’s Divin Mubama, who ended up staying at the London Stadium for the rest of the campaign.

Championship club lead the race for Divin Mubama

After making 12 appearances for the Irons’ senior side last term, Mubama continued to reject a new contract with the club and became a free agent at the weekend.

The ‘smart’ 19-year-old has been the target of a number of clubs in the Championship and across Europe, although it is unclear whether Wednesday is still interested in his signature.

However, it now looks like one of their Championship rivals is leading the race to snap him up this summer.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Sunderland are in pole position to sign Mubama on a free transfer.

The teenager has been highly rated at West Ham, with the Premier League side keen to keep hold of him before he leaves in search of regular game time.

Would Sheffield Wednesday rekindle their interest in the striker?

Given his potential and the lack of a transfer fee, Mubama could have been a good signing for the Owls this summer.

He is unlikely to become first-choice in the Championship this term but would have added a quality back-up and could also have allowed older players such as Michael Smith to leave Hillsborough.

Whether they’re still looking at Mubama or not, Danny Rohl has certainly earned the trust of the fans already this summer, so there’s no doubt he’ll have a plan and a number of targets to lead his attack this season future.

Although many of them could cost money, so maybe trying to hijack Sunderland’s business wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.

Rohl has shown he’s capable of bringing in quality players like Jamal Lowe and Yan Valery thus far, so perhaps he’d have an advantage entering negotiations.
