The Palmer Lake Police Department is looking for a suspect in a hit and run

(PALMER LAKE, Colo.) — The Palmer Lake Police Department (PLPD) is asking the hit and run suspect to turn himself in so he can give officers his side of the story.

According to the PLPD, on Sunday, June 23, around 8:15 p.m., officers were called to the intersection of the 105 Freeway and Westward Lane. Initial information from the police was that a truck and a motorcycle were involved in the accident. Several witnesses saw the crash and ran to the aid of the motorcyclist, who was thrown from the motorcycle and lying on the roadway with what appeared to be serious injuries.

The motorcyclist has been identified as David Mitchem. When officers and paramedics responded to the scene, he was conscious and breathing. Mitchem was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and is in the ICU, according to PLPD.

Witnesses saw two suspects in the truck who left the scene without checking or exchanging information with others. The police tried to find the suspects but were unsuccessful. Witnesses gave officers a description of both suspects.

PLPD said the driver was later identified as Brent Gilmer, who lives in Palmer Lake. Police attempted to contact Gilmer, who did not respond, and police are searching for his whereabouts.

Police later learned that Gilmer had allegedly posted on social media about the accident. The PLPD, in the interest of gathering all information related to its investigation, asked Gilmer to turn himself in to discuss the incident with officers and provide his perspective.

“If he is truly innocent of the charges brought against him, then he holds vital information that the PLPD needs to ensure proper justice for the victim and his family,” the PLPD writes.
