Investigations underway after a large barn fire in Newquay

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said arson is suspected following a large barn fire in Newquay.

Crews received the first of 39,999 calls at 7.33pm yesterday evening (Wednesday 3 July).

At its peak, 56 firefighters were fighting the blaze in the Treloggan area.

The fire was extinguished a few hours later. A police investigation is now underway.

The CFRS said: “At 7.33pm Fire Control received the first of thirty-nine 999 calls reporting a large fire in the Treloggan area of ​​Newquay.

“Two machines were mobilized from Newquay along with a station manager. Due to the volume of calls and information received from callers, a third machine was mobilized from Perranporth.

“On arrival crews were confronted with an approximately 20m x 30m barn fully engulfed in fire and spreading to neighboring hedges and requested a fourth appliance which was mobilized from St Columb.

“An incident command unit was mobilized from Launceston and the operational support unit from St Austell.

“Further requests for assistance were made by the incident commander and appliances were mobilized from St Dennis, Padstow and Tolvaddon, as well as an environmental unit and pump support from Penzance.

“We currently have 56 firefighters on site led by a group manager and two station managers. Good progress is being made in extinguishing the fire.”

At 9.48pm, an update was posted: ‘The fire is now out. The incident is being reduced and crews are continuing to mitigate. A crew will remain on site until the early hours to monitor and extinguish any hotspots.

“Arson is suspected. Anyone with any information should contact police quoting Log 805 of 03/07/24.”
