72-hour ‘danger to life’ warnings as Met Office predicts end to heat wave

Britons are being warned of a “danger to life” as storms are forecast to wreak weather havoc over the next three days. The Met Office has issued warnings as the weekend’s sunny weather is replaced by rain.

Temperatures soared to 24C in some areas on Saturday, with many people taking advantage of the warm weather. However, not all parts of the country were so lucky today, with large areas under a yellow storm warning.




The Met Office originally issued these warnings yesterday, but they have since been updated, with some regions of south and south-west England and Wales no longer included. The warnings will remain in place tomorrow and will be extended to Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

The warning for today reads: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop to the south and west of this area early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily north as they develop into larger areas of heavy rain before spreading in the evening Late”.

It added: “Some heavy showers are possible in a few places, bringing up to 30mm in less than an hour and possibly 50mm in 2 to 3 hours, leading to surface water flooding. Large hail, frequent lightning and possibly strong wind gusts. there will be additional localized hazards.”

“Consider whether your location is at risk of flash flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and flood emergency kit. Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Yellow warnings for tomorrow include thunderstorms in Scotland as well as rain in Northern Ireland and parts of England.
