Melbourne’s monster cat in the race for the world’s longest feline

A giant Melbourne cat is in the running to become the world’s longest cat, measuring 120cm long and weighing 14kg.

The Croydon moggie is on the brink of international fame but Omar is a reluctant star, crouching down for the cameras as 7 News tried to capture his award-winning physique.

You can’t get to 14kg by climbing trees and jumping fences – Omar is more of a catnapper.

“I think once everyone has had their share of him, he’ll be happy to go back to being a house cat,” said his owner Stephanie Hirst.

It could be a while before the Croydon cat gets back to normal. He’s already a social media star thanks to a repost from the Cats of Instagram page.

The bright lights of international stardom then came knocking with a call from the Guinness World Records team.

“We’ve got a very big cat on our hands,” said Stephanie Hirst, the moggie’s owner. Picture: 7 News

Now Omar is in the running for his own title of world’s longest cat.

“We were expecting a nine-pound cat and he got to that before he was a year old,” Ms Hirst said.

“That’s when we realized he wasn’t done yet and we had a very big cat on our hands.”

Initial measurements recorded the kitty at an astonishing 120cm long, but current record holder Ludo, from the UK, is 118cm long. So now it’s the battle of the heavy cats.

Omar is intent on keeping a low profile even as his star continues to rise, Ms Hirst said.

“She’s not going to be a diva anytime soon.”
