Warning for drivers ahead of more closures on the M6 ​​- here’s all the data

A warning has been issued to motorists ahead of further overnight closures on the busy M6 motorway.

National Highways has released the latest engineering data as it works to complete resurfacing as part of the Warrington to Wigan upgrade.




The project adds additional emergency areas, new technology and one lane in each direction on the motorway between junction 21a and junction 26. All four lanes of the carriageway on sections of the route between Croft and Orrell junctions are also being resurfaced.

National Highways said most of the day work on the project has been completed, with overnight work continuing to install gantry signs, other signs and to resurface what will be the new lanes two and three of the freeway.

A spokesman said: “Due to the scale of equipment required to resurface, there will be a series of overnight road closures between 9pm and 6am over the next few weeks.”

The closures are:

  • Junction 21a to 22 M6 northbound – closed Thursday 18 and Friday 19 July.
  • M6 southbound junction 22 – 21a – closed Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 July
  • Junction 22 – 23 northbound M6 – closed Thursday 11 and Tuesday 16 July
  • M6 southbound junction 23 – 22 – closed Wednesday 10 and Friday 12 July
  • Junction 23 – 26 northbound M6 – closed Saturday morning (6 July – 12:30 – 6:00 – timetable to accommodate people leaving an event at Haydock Park late Friday night 5 July), Monday (8 July) and Wednesday , July 17
  • Junction 26 – 23 southbound M6 – closed Tuesday (July 9)

“The exact dates and times of the work may be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Clearly signed diversions will be in place overnight when a carriageway is closed,” the spokesman added.
