Live: Vans and road closures outside polling station in Cornwall on election day

Access to a polling station in Cornwall was allegedly blocked by South West Water (SWW) vans. The road leading to a polling station in St Austell is currently blocked by vehicles and road closure signs.

The general election takes place today as the country heads out to vote and make their voices heard. It’s expected to be a historic day, with more people turning out than in previous general elections, and you can find out more here.

But some people in St Austell may struggle to even get to Ranelagh Road station as access to the road is apparently blocked.

One person reported that SWW trucks are causing the problem. They said: “SWW trucks are completely blocking the road at one end, as well as closed signs. ‘Road Closed’ signs are blocking the other end. Fortunately, we live within walking distance and have no mobility problems.”

Footage from the scene shows maintenance vans parked along the street. There are also road closure and diversion signs at the end of the intersection.

It is not known if disabled access was provided to those who need it at the Salvation Army Hall. Cornwall Council and SWW have been contacted for comment.
