‘Brilliant’ teenager seen doing a beep test with Leeds United’s first team in latest training video

Leeds United’s squad have been testing in the first two days after returning to Thorp Arch for pre-season, and a teenager was seen doing the beep test with the first team.

Leeds posted a video earlier in the week of Daniel Farke’s squad reuniting in the new training kit, completing tests in the gym. Georginio Rutter was seen saying he “wanted to go home” after a power test.

The hard work starts from the start and Leeds will soon be off to Germany for a training camp and a few friendlies. The club confirmed that fans will not be able to attend matches.

But Leeds return for a friendly against Harrogate Town on July 19 and then face La Liga giants Valencia on August 3 before their Championship campaign gets underway on August 10 against Portsmouth at Elland Road.

Teenager seen doing a beep test with the Leeds first team

Leeds boasts a number of young stars coming through. The obvious one is Mateo Joseph, who is expected to play a significant role under Farke in 2024-25, while Charlie Crew has made the sub bench.

Both Joseph and Crew were in the first of three groups to take a beep test in the latest video from Leeds, alongside Joe Gelhardt, Charlie Cresswell, Sam Greenwood and the ‘brilliant’ 18-year-old talent James Debayo.

Debayo became a regular in the U21 team last season, mostly as a centre-back but also moving into midfield on occasion. He was on the bench in the 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves under Jesse Marsch.

It’s interesting that Debayo was included over the likes of Diogo Monteiro and Kris Moore, both of whom were more established defenders in the 21s. But also, Debayo’s inclusion might not be something to note.

The winner of the first group was not stated, but Sam Byram won the second group. A team of seven including Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev, Junior Firpo, Dan James and Georginio Rutter.

The video ends with Joel Piroe, Willy Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville and Pascal Struijk, the latter winning out of the four. Patrick Bamford and Joe Rodon were not seen and the goalkeepers did not participate.
