Loughborough votes overwhelmingly to change general election

Loughborough residents voted overwhelmingly for change, with Labor Party’s Jeevun Sandher elected as the town’s new MP. Mr Sandher will replace the Conservatives’ Jane Hunt, who had held the seat for the past five years.

The town has not had a Labor MP since Andy Reed lost his seat in 2010. Loughborough was represented by Nicky Morgan from 2010 to 2019, with Jane Hunt succeeding him.

It was a sensational night for Labor across the country, with Labor coming to victory. Mr Sandher received 17,249 votes to beat the other four candidates, including Ms Hunt, who came second with 12,289 votes.

Mr Sandher said the result “feels great”, adding: “We have now crossed the threshold in governance. We have to do a lot in this difficult moment”.

He added: “In 2019 (we had) our biggest defeat in a century, and now the point where we can help change people’s lives.”

Ms Hunt said she was saddened by the result and had “absolutely enjoyed being the Member of Parliament for Loughborough”. She added that the national result was “very difficult” as “a fantastic amount of experience goes out the door tonight”.
