The Tories were destroyed in Greater Manchester as Labor won 25 out of 27 seats – and George Galloway was ousted by Starmer’s party

The Tories were decimated in Greater Manchester, losing every seat – including the Tory stronghold of Altrincham.

Labor won 25 seats in Greater Manchester, with the Lib Dems winning the other two. Reform UK came second in 14 of the places.

George Galloway lost his seat in Rochdale, with Labor MP Paul Waugh becoming one of 11 new MPs to be elected in Greater Manchester. The Labor leader, who won the seat in February’s by-election, was a no-show that night.

It comes just four-and-a-half years after Boris Johnson led the Tories to victory, turning many of Labour’s northern hearts blue. But the Tories have now lost the red wall seats they won at the last election, with two MPs who were ousted in 2019 re-elected.

The Conservatives were pushed into third place in Leigh, Labour’s Jo Platt beating Reform into second place by almost 9,000 votes. In Bury North – an important seat that was the most marginal in Britain last time – Labour’s James Frith secured a majority of almost 7,000.

In Bolton West – another key seat where the Tories won a record majority of almost 9,000 votes in 2019 – Labor regained the seat, beating the Tories by almost 5,000 votes. In perhaps the most extraordinary result of the night in Greater Manchester, Labor won Altrincham and Sale West for the first time, taking a constituency held by the Tories for almost 100 years.

The seat has been held since 1997 by the great Tory Sir Graham Brady, who stood down at this election. Chris Clarkson, who became the first Tory MP for Heywood and Middleton in 2019, stood in the Tory stronghold of Stratford-on-Avon this time but lost.
