A petition has been launched to ‘Stop the fencing and damage to Brockwell Park’

Brockwell Park suffered severe damage as a result of the multiple large-scale festivals that took place in May and June this year, with large parts of the park still cordoned off.

A petition has now been launched calling on Lambeth Council to stop such “unsustainable commercial events”.

The full text of the petition reads:

Stop fencing and damaging Brockwell Park

We seek to end the Brockwell Park precinct for unsustainable commercial events.

We are caught in a cycle of fencing for events and re-fencing to repair the inevitable damage. This deprives the community of its peaceful open space and amenity meadows for an unacceptable length of time during the spring/summer months.

Severe soil compaction leads to loss of trees. The council is considering a radical restructuring of the land to increase drainage and footing. This will permanently alter the space to his detriment.

We are looking for:

1. A cessation of large-scale commercial events.

2. A transparent damage assessment in 2024 and previous years. An ecological management plan follows, rather than intrusive fieldwork to facilitate more events.

3. An Events Strategy formulated with the main criterion of an offer for locals and visitors, based on the need not only to maintain but also to improve the canopy cover and biodiversity on the present event area.

Brockwell Park was given to the community in 1892: a green lung set aside from smog and traffic. It performs a vital and valuable daily function that should not be changed. It should no longer be treated as a trading asset.

Why is this important?

To protect Brockwell Park from ecological damage and stop the fencing off of public space so everyone can enjoy it.
