The Green vote in Bristol makes them Labour’s main challenger now

A Green surge in Bristol itself not only saw the party’s first MP in the city, but also saw voters place them second in every other constituency.

The Green Party are now officially Labor’s main challengers in all five constituencies in Bristol – after Carla Denyer’s victory in Bristol Central was followed by strong support across the city. A total of 65,762 people voted Green across Bristol’s five constituencies.

In Bristol East, Green Party candidate Ani Stafford-Townsend won more than 30% of the vote to reduce Labour’s majority to just 6,606, while in Bristol South and Bristol North West the Greens jumped from fourth place last time on the second. .

Victorious Greens MP Carla Denyer, the party’s co-leader, said her success – which was matched by Green wins in three other constituencies across the country – meant people could vote Green and potentially get a Green MP.

“I’m over the moon and so grateful for all the support I’ve received from voters in Bristol Central and across the country,” she said. “We know voters like our policies. Policies such as an increased minimum wage and better investment in public services.

“We entered these elections with an ambitious but realistic goal of quadrupling our number of deputies. The voters have spoken, I think this is the direction the Greens are going from now on,” she added.
