East Midlands Airport traffic updates following the road closure

An accident has led to the closure of a road near East Midlands Airport this afternoon (Friday 5 July). Leicestershire Police said the road between Donington services at J23A on the M1 and the A6 island link to Wilders Way was closed in both directions.

It said motorists could still access the EMA from junction 23A. However, he asked motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes.




The force said the road closure would also affect the A453 Ashby Road and the A6 Kegworth Bypass. A spokesman for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said an air ambulance was called to the scene after one person was injured in the incident.

The severity of their condition was not disclosed.

Two cars and HGV involved

A spokesman for National Highways East Midlands said two cars and an HGV were involved in a crash on the A453 this afternoon. They said:

There has been a collision and subsequent fire involving two cars and the HGV on the A453 between the M1 J23A and the A6 at Kegworth. All emergency services, including the air ambulance, are in attendance along with traffic officers and National Highways contractors.

The A453 is now reopened

National Highways East Midlands has confirmed that the A453 is now reopened following an earlier “serious” collision. We are waiting to hear from East Midlands Ambulance Service as Leicestershire Police have reported that one person has been taken to hospital following the incident. However, the severity of their injuries could not be confirmed by the force.

Diversion routes

National Highways East Midlands has confirmed that the A453 remains closed southbound. It is closed between the A6 (Kegworth) and the M1/A42. Detour routes for affected drivers were provided by the National Highways:

  • Take the A453 north to M1 J24.
  • At J24 take the M1 south to J23.
  • At J23, exit the M1 and go around the junction to join the M1 northbound.
  • Exit the M1 at J23a Finger Farm.
  • Take the first exit at the Finger Farm roundabout.
  • Rejoin the A453 southbound.

The road remains closed

The A453 near J23A of the M1 remains closed in one direction. Previously, traffic tracker INRIX reported that the southbound side had reopened, but now reports that the southbound side is closed. While the northbound route has been reopened. Congestion is still reported in the area, however it is much improved compared to a few hours ago.

It reported a “serious collision”.
