Bristol General Election Results: Debrief

As with the rest of the UK, July 4 produced a historic night (or perhaps more accurately, the historic hours of an ungodly morning) when it came to the results of the Bristol General Election.

In the race where the national press had ended, Carla Denyer became the city’s first Green MP, taking the seat from nine-year-old Thangam Debbonaire in a huge Labor swing.

But elsewhere, the sea of red that has swept across Britain has overwhelmed the outer reaches of the wider Bristol area, sweeping away big Tory beasts including Jacob Rees-Mogg (in North East Somerset and Hanham), Liam Fox (North Somerset) and Jack Lopresti (Filton and Bradley Stoke).

This left the city region completely owned by Labour, with the exception of the small Island Green in the centre. But it is worth noting that Denyer’s party also increased its share of the vote across Bristol, reducing Labor majorities in three of the other four constituencies.

Cable journalists wrapped up their election coverage by staying up all night counting votes in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath, watching the results emerge and getting to know the winners, losers and in-betweens of the 2024 general election.

What have I made of all this? Join a sleepless Matty Edwards and Priyanka Raval for a special, slightly delirious look at the Bristol General Election results as they try to unravel what happened.

In the last 24 hours, we’ve seen an all-out Tory rout, a Labor landslide and a breakthrough win for the Green Party. But where does that leave our city – and country – as 2024 rolls on?
