Bristol MP reacts after being appointed to new government role

A Bristol MP says he is “delighted” after being announced as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Sir Keir Starmer made the appointment of Darren Jones MP earlier on Friday (July 5).

The appointment of the Labor Member of Parliament for Bristol North West was announced on No 10 social media shortly before 7pm: “Darren Jones MP @darrenpjones has been appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury @hmtreasury. He will participate in the Cabinet”.




Darren Jones MP addressed X, formerly of Twitter, saying: “I am delighted that the Prime Minister has asked me to become his Chief Secretary to the Treasury. I look forward to working with the Chancellor and the rest of the Cabinet to turn the page and rebuild Britain.”

Mr Jones, who is 37, was shadow chief secretary to the Treasury in the run-up to the election and was a prominent member of several parliamentary committees, earning him a notable profile beyond Westminster. In the general election, voters overwhelmingly backed Mr Jones as the Labor MP increased his majority to 15,669.
