‘It’s expensive’: Sam Burgess reveals extent of injuries at Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess has revealed that despite a big win yesterday, it’s not all good news for his side.

Wolves took advantage of a lackluster performance from Huddersfield Giants to tear apart Ian Watson’s side in a 48-0 victory.

Eight tries in an easy win included scores for Matt Dufty and Josh Drinkwater – with eight separate try scorers.

Stefan Ratchford’s display was particularly outstanding, hitting eight of eight attempts.

This puts them level with St Helens on 22 points and just two points behind Wigan Warriors at the top of the Super League table.

It was a fantastic performance for Burgess’ men, but this has now been marred by some bad news.

After the game, Sam Burgess was understandably pleased with the result but shared fresh injury concerns – in addition to not already being without Jordy Crowther and Joe Philbin, as well as Luke Thomas and Leon Hayes, who have season-ending injuries.

He said: “I’m happy with everything tonight… but we’ve lost three players so it’s costly. I had a few injuries.

“We lost two outside backs and Lachlan Fitzgibbon in the first ten minutes so it’s quite costly.

“It’s not looking good for Connor (Key), I mean … he’s had major surgery there, so it’s not looking good for him.

“Toby (King) will have a scan and we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s never good when hamstrings pull.”

He confirmed he did not know if Wrench injured the same knee he had surgery on, but that the center was “very upset” in the dressing room and expected to be out for a long time.

He continued, noting that it wasn’t just the back injuries: “Lachlan Fitzgibbon is struggling with a couple of injuries there so we just have to reassess, regroup and play again in six days – so we’ll have to find some troops to go in.”

He will be hoping the squad is in good form for the clash with Leeds Rhinos next week.
