Danny Rohl explains why Sheffield Wednesday’s key star was absent from their first pre-season outing

Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed a winning start to their pre-season campaign yesterday.

The Owls ran out 2-0 winners over Alfreton Town as Josh Windass and Malik Wilks found the back of the net in their pre-season opener.

Sheffield Wednesday played two different teams in each half, giving debuts to new signings Ben Hamer, Yan Valery, Max Lowe, Svante Ingelsson and Olaf Kobacki.

James Beadle, Di’Shon Bernard and Dominic Iorfa were the only senior players left in the squad for their trip to Derbyshire.

Beadle only joined the club three days ago, while Bernard was unavailable following Jamaica’s exit from the Copa America this week. However, Iorfa’s absence initially remained unexplained.

Rohl explains the absence of Dominic Iorfa

Danny Rohl addressed his omission at full-time, telling The Star: “We know what his strength is, he’s got great, great speed and it was important for him to train at home, he wasn’t part of the game because he started from beginning. Thursday with the first training.

“It’s important to control the load. I think for all players there is a reason why we took them and kept them and Dominic was a strong part of us last season.”

Sheffield Wednesday need to add a defender

Iorfa became the fourth player to sign a new deal at Hillsborough this week and looks set to be a key player in Rohl’s rebuild.

The centre-back made 28 league appearances last season and adds some depth to the quality squad, but it remains to be seen whether he will be a regular in the backline.

Wednesday’s defense has been massively strengthened under Rohl, but they will certainly need strengthening if they are to reach that top half.

The German manager has already added Max Lowe and Yan Valery to the flanks, but more talent in the middle would be very useful if they are to avoid successive relegations.
