Watford have braced themselves for a significant transfer battle

Watford are preparing for a coup this summer as 20-year-old Yaser Asprilla is being targeted by Premier League clubs.

According to reports in the print edition of the Mirror (via Give Me Sport ), both Arsenal and Everton want to take the winger to the Premier League. He registered 11 goal involvements over the course of last season and is currently playing for his country Colombia in the Copa America tournament.

The youngster is about to enter the final season of his contract at Vicarage Road and that has led to suggestions that the fee could be as high as £15m for Premier League clubs. This is still higher than his valuation on Transfermarkt, which is up to £7.6m.

Asprilla, who has scored twice for his country in six outings, began his youth career at Envigado FC where he made 40 senior appearances as a teenager. This caught the attention of Watford, and he initially joined on loan at the start of 2022. A few months later, he made the move permanent and the fee is believed to be around £3 million.

However, Premier League clubs could be forced to wait another season as it has been reported that Watford have “no intention” of selling their star man. The Watford Observer reported that only a “depressing” sum would tempt manager Tom Cleverly to sanction an exit, the kind of sum that could give the Hornets serious buying power as they chase a Premier League place League.

“In our position, everyone has a price” he said. “But there are players I have discussed and expressed my opinion that I would fight a lot harder to keep.

“We are very simple about how we want to look as a team and with a great pre-season under our belt we will look a different team to the last nine games of the season that have just gone.

“I see certain people really playing a part in it and I’d really like to keep them.”

Cleverly, the Hornets could only finish 15th last season, their second consecutive campaign outside the top flight. They haven’t had three consecutive seasons in the second tier since 2015 and will be hoping to ensure they don’t endure a fourth in 2025/26.

The writer’s vision

Smart clearly want to keep hold of their star man and even if he left on a ‘free’ next summer, there would be a fee due as he would still be under 23.

We wonder what could be an acceptable fee for the player. £15m sounds like a lot of money, but it doesn’t come close to the £140m that promotion to the Premier League brings.

Watford will not want to lose such an impactful player, especially as they are not agitating for a move. With the club and player on good terms, only a big bid could win him over and it seems £15m might not be enough.
