Guy Martin’s diagnosis in adulthood after girlfriend drove ‘biscuits’

Guy Martin has revealed he was only diagnosed with Aspergers because he was driving an ex-girlfriend ‘crackers’. The documentary host returns to our TV screens tonight with a new project – Guy Martin’s Lost WWII Bomber on Channel 4 at 9pm.

The program sees the star help recover a crashed Second World War Lancaster bomber – and the remains of its missing crew members – from the depths of a Dutch lake where it was submerged for 80 years. Guy, 42, has previously spoken about being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome as an adult.

He apparently doesn’t like working from a script and works by answering questions from off-camera crew members. Guy explained that he was persuaded by a girlfriend at the time to seek professional help.

Speaking to the Sunday Times in 2021, Guy said: “I was returning her biscuits so she forced me – well, she didn’t force me, but she said: ‘Are we going to see this psychologist?’ Anyway, I sat there for a day and it turned out to be a form of autism: Asperger’s.

He added: “It’s true that I’ve been diagnosed with Asperger’s, but I’d say, ‘What a load of guts.’ They try to name him – “Oh, he’s like that because of that.” Everyone is different. We are all different.”

Asperger syndrome can mean that people have difficulties with social interactions, limited interests and distinct strengths. The NHS says Asperger’s (or Asperger syndrome) is used by some people to describe autistic people with average or above average intelligence.

Guy added: “The way I look at it is maybe having that is why I am the way I am. Maybe it’s all because of the autistic side. I do not know.
