Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl has (again) given no indication of his intentions in the transfer window, giving the Scottish media license to criticize his refusal to comment on any names as “frozen”. which meant completely destroying Scott Wright’s story.

The German manager, last year at the Owls, has been heavily linked with a move for the surplus Rangers winger, who was, as reported, included in the trip to Holland.

But when asked about it, he did as he does with all transfer stories – cards close to his chest.

He said:

“I won’t talk about the name because it doesn’t make sense. This market moves so fast. We have an idea of what we want to have, I have an idea of how I want to play in the new season. We know what we need to improve when we look back from last season and then it’s about finding the right pieces to make our team stronger and stronger as we are very ambitious for the new season.”

This is not at all dissimilar to what he said before last January when asked about similar things:

“The first thing is always to look at what we can do in the transfer market, what type or profile we need. The first question is not about money or salary, but about choosing the right player for us. If we say yes, then we look at the terms. This is the way. Sometimes you need a good player in a key position and that costs money, but I’m also looking for young players to come in so I can improve them. Now we have to find a good balance between who can help us immediately and give us a good impact and maybe who is the guy who can improve us in the next few weeks and be ready for the future.”

Then finally:

“Everyone knows what I’m asking for and what I expect in January. I have made a clear list of what I want to do in the market and this is a normal process. It’s not an idea from one day, it’s ideas from a process from me and my coaching staff, we’ve been together and we always have meetings every week. Check out some players who maybe weren’t first on the list and took a step in the right direction. It’s about supporting them and keeping them, but there are others that are a bit far. You have to be honest with these players. We have to see what we can do from both sides. It’s important to see the man behind the player.”

In short, he never comments on exact speculation and dodges all questions about anything more precise.

The Scottish press turned that into “cryptic” and “stingy” with “ice cream” mentioned in there too – no, that’s how the German does business.

Not unlike how former Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst did it – playing it very cryptic indeed.

Nor do these new quotes pour cold water on Wright’s potential move away from Ibrox or vice versa.

Time will tell.
