Public pool bars after ‘unacceptable’ and ‘dangerous’ behaviour.

Public access to a swimming pool in Leicestershire has been “suspended with immediate effect” due to “unacceptable” and “dangerous” behavior by “young people”. Iveshead School, in Shepshed, said it was suspending its Wednesday public swimming sessions at the pool.

A spokesman for Forest Street Academy said the decision was made after “several occasions” where “groups of young people” committed “vandalism”, were “unpleasant and rude to lifeguard staff” and “disturbed other swimmers”. . They said that on Wednesday (July 3), despite being “reprimanded” by staff for their “unruly behaviour”, the troublemakers decided to “throw dozens of water beads onto the changing room floor and into the pool”. .

This caused “a real health and safety concern”, the spokesman said, and caused “upset and extra work” for staff. The school said that, after “much consideration”, public sessions would be suspended to “allow time to review admissions policies” and consider “next steps”.

The school’s full statement said: “On a number of occasions the behavior of groups of young people during public swimming sessions was unacceptable – vandalism occurred, disrupted other swimmers and was unpleasant and rude to lifeguard staff.

“Many have received warnings and others have been banned from public swimming, unfortunately the behavior continues. On Wednesday, July 3, after being reprimanded by staff for their unruly behavior, a group of youths decided to throw dozens of water beads onto the locker room floor and into the pool.

“This dangerous behavior has caused a real health and safety concern. As you can appreciate, if a child were to swallow one of the beads, the consequences could be life-threatening, if the beads got into the pool filtration system it could cause machinery damage.

“This caused annoyance and extra work for the lifeguard and headquarters staff. They should not be expected to deal with such behavior in what should be a relaxed and enjoyable environment for everyone.
