Major road resurfacing work in Weston-super-Mare began today

Work to improve the road surface in Weston-super-Mare started today. The treatment works, which will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm, will be completed in stages and will involve a road closure on the outbound (north) side of the A370 (Somerset Avenue/Flowerdown Bridge/Winterstoke Road/Hildesheim Bridge).

The first stage of the works will be to improve the road surface, this will be followed by a surface sealing process and subsequently a new seal will be installed using a night closure. The work, known as surfacing, is carried out on roads to prevent damage and potholes.

There is a small window of opportunity for this, as it only takes a few years for water to penetrate the road surface and cause it to crack and degrade. Once this starts to happen, the road will need to be completely rebuilt.

Resurfacing is an expensive and disruptive process that uses valuable resources with a large carbon footprint and the council seeks to avoid this process through preventative measures.

Only one section of the A370 will be closed at a time, as the closure will be staggered throughout the week as different sections of the road are treated. Once the roads are reopened, there will still be a lane closure for safety reasons until road markings are installed.

The works will be completed on the following dates:
